2017 Asia Winter Baseball League week 1 scores and recap

It’s winter ball season here in Taiwan.  We’re about 9 days into the 2017 Asia Winter Baseball League, with each team have played 8 games so far.  Here’s the Asia Winter Baseball League week 1 scores and recap.

JABA

Despite being semi-pro, the JABA All-Star continues to dominate the league in both pitching and batting.  JABA finished the first week winter league with 6 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw.

RHP from Tokyo Gas 臼井 浩 (Usui Isamu) currently lead the league in number of wins have posted 0.82 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 15 strikeouts over 11 innings of work.

KBO

The KBO team finished week 1 of the winter league with 5 wins and 3 losses.

Kim Young Hwan of the Police team lead the league in batting average slashing .400/.423/.560 over 7 games, 25 at-bats.  While RHP Hong Sung Min remains perfect with 0.00 ERA, 0.64 WHIP over 2 starts, 11 innings.

NPB East

The NPB East team finished week 1 with 4 wins and 4 losses.

Yokohama BayStars 19 years old prospect 細川 成也 (Hosokawa Seiya) posted .259/.364/.556 over 27 at-bats at the same time topping the home run chart with 2 home runs.

CPBL

The CPBL team finished week 1 with 3 wins and 5 losses.  Offense-wise, they’re able to get on base.  However, the team just unable score when runners on scoring positions.

“I noticed a lot of our young guys are all trying to swing for the fence, they just need to slow it down a bit and take back a notch”  Said the CPBL team manager Lin.

Chinatrust Brothers 王威晨 (Wang Wei-Chen) and Lamigo Monkeys 黃子鵬 (Huang Tzu-Peng) are two of the notable players from this years CPBL squad.

Wang posted .355/.459/.452 over 31 at-bats, while the sidearmer Huang has been solid with the record of 1.39 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 11 strikeouts over 13 innings.

NPB West

The NPB West team finished week 1 with 3 wins and 5 losses.

One of the players to watch for is Orix Buffaloes pitcher 吉田 凌 (Yoshida Ryo).  Who posted a record of 3.21 ERA, 1.36 WHIP over 14 innings so far in the winter league.

Ryo also pitched a 3-hit shutout game against NPB East team on December 2nd, where he used total of 119 pitches while striking 5.

WBSC

Team WBSC finished week 1 with 2 wins, 5 losses and 1 draw placing them last in the standings.

There seems to be an issue for team WBSC not having enough pitchers.  As it today, the team is expect to bring in Japanese LHP 杉尾拓郎 (Sugio Takuro) in hope to add more depth in their pitching department.
