Wang Yi-Cheng Homers In First Plate Appearance
Hello, my name is Wang Yi-Cheng. I’m new to the team, and here’s a home run! Talk about starting your professional career with a BANG!
With zero hope of making the 2021 playoff, on November 9, the Fubon Guardians decided to call up several rookies to the first team.
Among the group of rookies was 18-year-old infielder 王苡丞 (Wang Yi-Cheng), who the Guardians selected in the second round at the 2021 CPBL draft.
Known for being a power hitter in his high school playing day, Wang Yi-Cheng fully exceeded everyone’s expectations in his first professional plate appearance. After he swung and missed the first two pitches, he zeroed in on the next fastball and sent it to deep right field for a solo home run.
In doing so, Wang became the seventh Taiwanese player in the CPBL history to hit a home run in their career first plate appearance.
At 18 years and 192 days, Wang Yi-Cheng became the second-youngest player to hit a home run in the CPBL. The CPBL record is currently held by the Monkeys shortstop Lin Cheng-Fei at 18 years and 187 days.
