CTBC Brothers News: José De Paula

On January 17, the CTBC Brothers announced the re-signing of José De Paula for the 2024 CPBL season. The 35-year-old Dominican left-hander will return for his 5th season in Taiwan.

Since 2020, José De Paula has carried the Brothers’ starting rotation as the ace with his consistent and reliable performance, which led to him winning back-to-back MVP awards and numerous pitching awards.

  • MVP: 2020, 2021
  • Strikeout Leader: 2020, 2021, 2022
  • ERA Leader: 2020, 2021
  • Win Leader: 2020, 2022
  • Best Ten Award: 2020, 2021, 2022

Although in 2023, he began showing signs of declining across the board in velocity, ERA, WHIP, K%, Whiff% and BB%, he still managed to put up a worthy, slightly above league average 3.53 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 173.1 innings.

  • Stats: 2021 vs 2022 vs 2023
  • ERA – 1.77 / 2.44 / 3.53
  • WHIP – 0.99 / 1.02 / 1.32
  • FIP – 2.21 / 2.10 / 3.13
  • Innings Pitched – 178 / 162 / 173.1
  • K% – 26.2 / 24.3 / 18.9
  • BB% – 3.5 / 3.2 / 5.3
  • Whiff% – 21.4 / 20.9 / 18.7

It is still unknown at this stage whether José De Paula just had one bad season last year or if it is the case of Father Time starting to catch up on him. But one thing for sure is that as long he can still eat innings, even if his number hovers around the league average level, he would still be a valuable asset to the Brothers’ rotation.

As of today, the CTBC Brothers have Shawn Morimando, José De Paula, Kirk McCarty and Daniel Mengden as their foreign players for the 2024 CPBL season.
