CPBL Foreign Players Updates Volume #316
Wei Chuan Dragons News: Bryan Woodall
On January 23, the Wei Chuan Dragons announced the re-signing of Bryan Woodall for the 2024 season. The 37-year-old American right-hander will return to Taiwan for his 10th season in the CPBL.
Bryan Woodall has been one of the most versatile pitchers on the Dragons’ pitching staff in the past few years, as he was able to split his time both as a starter and reliever based on the team’s needs.
In the 2023 season, Bryan Woodall appeared in 15 games, of which he started 12. In the span of 80 innings, he compiled a 2.59 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. Despite his strikeout rate (6 K%) declining, and his walk rate (8 BB%) rising, he still managed to put out a solid performance with his experience.
During the 2023 Taiwan Series, Bryan Woodall appeared in Games 1, 4 and 7 as both starter and reliever. He logged 12 innings with a 1.50 ERA and 0.83 WHIP. After the series, he was named as one of the Outstanding Players of the series.
– Game 1: 3 IP, 1 ER, 0 K, 1 BB
– Game 4: 7 IP, 1 ER, 3 K, 3 BB
– Game 7: 2 IP, 0 ER, 1 K, 0 BB
As of today, the Wei Chuan Dragons have Jasier Herrera, Bryan Woodall as their foreign players for the 2024 CPBL season. The Dragons GM revealed they are currently in negotiations with the goal to bring back Drew Gagnon and Jake Brigham.
Bryan Woodall Gets Domestic Status in 2025?
It is worth mentioning that Bryan Woodall is on the brink of getting his domestic player status in the CPBL.
As per CPBL regulations, foreign players who accumulated nine years of service time in the CPBL can file for domestic player status. This means they will no longer take up a foreign player spot on the team roster.
For Bryant Woodall, who is currently sitting on 8 years of service time, he will need to pitch at least 80 innings or stay on the Dragons 1st team roster for at least 125 days in the 2024 season to earn his domestic status in the 2025 season.
How CPBL Service Time Works
CPBL players can receive one year of service if they meet the following criteria (if based on a 120-game season)
- 125 days on 1st team roster
- For pitchers: Pitch at least 80 innings. (2/3 of the team’s total games in a single season)
- For position players: Appear at least 80 games. (2/3 of the team’s total games in a single season)
Wei Chuan Dragons’ Bryan Woodall pitched 2.1 scoreless innings last night and has accumulated 8 years of service in the CPBL.
