Uni-Lions News: Scott Blewett

About a week or so ago, the Uni-Lions GM told the media that they are currently targeting two new foreign pitchers with MLB experience. On August 5, the first unnamed pitcher turned out to be Randall Delgado. And the unnamed second pitcher is still behind the veil.

On August 9, rumours began circulating on Taiwan’s PTT baseball message board that the Uni-Lions have signed 27-year-old American right-hander Scott Blewett as their new foreign pitcher. The PTT netizen discovered that the Uni-Lions had filed a new work permit to the Ministry of Labour, and Scott Blewett himself also followed the Uni-Lions on his Instagram account.

While the Uni-Lions GM did not confirm the signing rumour, he told Liberty Sports that they had reached an agreement with this yet-to-be-named pitcher. He is an American right-hander with MLB experience and is currently active in Double-A this season. This new foreign pitcher should arrive in Taiwan next week.

Fast forward to August 12, the Uni-Lions finally announced the signing of Scott Blewett. According to the team, the 27-year-old right-hander will arrive in Taiwan on August 16 and is likely to make his CPBL first-team debut on August 18.

Scott Blewett began his professional career in 2014 with the Kansas City Royals system and had two brief stints in MLB from 2020 to 2021 season pitching for the Royals. In 8 innings, Scott Blewett compiled a 3.38 ERA and 1.87 WHIP. After leaving the Royals system at the end of the 2021 season, he joined the White Sox and Braves system but mainly spent his time in Double-A.

Prior to his signing with the Uni-Lions, Scott Blewett was active in Double-A. He posted a 4.21 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 72.2 innings of work. It is worth mentioning that the Southern League (Double-A) currently have an average ERA of 4.78.

With the signing of Scott Blewett, the Uni-Lions currently have Brock Dykxhoorn, Logan Ondrusek (injured) and Keyvius Sampson as foreign players on their active roster. With the August 31 trade deadline approaching, the Uni-Lions would have to cut the number of foreign players to four.

  1. Looking at Blewitt’s career pitching stats, I was reminded of Andy Sisco, probably because both pitched in the MLB majors for the Kansas City Royals. Like Sisco, Blewitt is big, although Blewitt is a righty, while Sisco was a southpaw. Like Sisco, Blewitt appears to have good stuff, but not MLB majors command. Another guy who likely sees his best future in Asia, particularly in light of the fact that he had pitched all of this season at AA at the age of 27.
