2024 Taiwan Series G2: Uni-Lions 10 – Brothers 3

On October 20, the Uni-Lions chewed through the Brothers’ pitching staff and won Game 2 of the 2024 Taiwan Series 10-3. With this win, the best-of-seven series is now tied 1-1.

Game 2 Recap

In Game 2, the CTBC Brothers rode on the momentum from their win last night and quickly took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to a solo home run by Yueh Cheng-Hua. The 23-year-old centre fielder, known for his scorching hot bat in the postseason, has slashed .327/.400/.500 across 16 Taiwan Series games.

The Uni-Lions fought back in the top of the second inning by stringing along five singles, scoring four runs and taking back the lead. Pan Chieh-Kai and Su Chih-Chieh got the ball rolling with back-to-back singles. Although veteran Lin Yi-Chuan flied out to deep centre, it allowed the runner to advance to third base.

Shortly after, Hsu Che-Yen tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single up the middle, and Chen Chung-Yu followed with another single to bring in the go-ahead run, making it 2-1. With runners on second and third, Lin Tzu-Chieh blooped a single to left field, scoring two more runs and extending the lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the second, the Brothers mounted their own rally. Wang Wei-Chen and Tseng Song-En led off with back-to-back singles, and Chiang Kun-Yu drove in a run with a clutch line drive single to centre, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Though the next batter grounded into a double play, Tseng Song-En was able to advance to third base and later scored on a line drive single by Lin Wu Chen-Wei, making it 4-3.

The Uni-Lions added a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to extend their lead to 6-3. In the top of the eighth, they added three more insurance runs, pushing the score to 10-3.

Meanwhile, the Brothers’ offence was held back by the Uni-Lions’ pitching staff for most of the game. Although the Brothers managed to put runners on base, the Uni-Lions’ pitchers consistently neutralised the threats, keeping the damage to a minimum. The most notable inning would be during the bottom of the sixth inning, where Mario Sanchez left runners on second and third with two outs. Hector Perez came in for relief and walked the next batter to load up the bases but escaped the jam unharmed with a flyout.

CTBC Brothers’ starter Daniel Mengden went five innings, giving up six runs on ten hits while striking out four. The Brothers’ bullpen failed to contain the Uni-Lions, allowing four more runs on five hits and issuing two walks across four innings.

Mario Sanchez, the Uni-Lions’ starting pitcher, allowed three runs and struck out three. He was followed by Hector Perez, who pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, and then Chen Yun-Wen, who struck out two in the ninth to seal the 10-3 victory for the Uni-Lions.
