CPBL Foreign Players Updates Volume #387
Fubon Guardians News: Rio Gomez
On May 21, the Fubon Guardians announced the release of Rio Gomez. The 30-year-old American left-hander finished his 2025 CPBL season with a 6.00 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over nine innings as a starting pitcher.
After a dominant 2024 season as a reliever with the Wei Chuan Dragons, where he posted an impressive 1.17 ERA and 0.78 WHIP over 92.1 innings across 63 games, Rio Gomez chose not to renew his contract with the Dragons during the offseason. Instead, he signed with the Fubon Guardians, who committed to using him as a starter.
Unfortunately, in just his second start of the 2025 season, on April 23, Rio Gomez sustained an elbow injury mid-game and was forced to leave early. To make things even worse, further medical examinations revealed a tear in his elbow ligament.
Following a month of rest, the Guardians decided to part ways with Rio Gomez after evaluating his condition. The team later signed David Buchanan to replace Gomez on the active roster.
With the release of Rio Gomez, the Fubon Guardians now have Roenis Elías, Shawn Morimando, Enderson Franco, Negishi Ryo (development contract), Ninomiya Isaki (development contract), David Buchanan and Suzuki Shunsuke as their foreign players.

Further Readings
Foreign players come and go. Therefore, we have compiled a foreign player tracker, and I’ll be updating that list regularly to keep pace with the ever-changing roster shuffle throughout the 2025 CPBL season.

Right now, Daryl Torres (26) and Deylen Miley (27) look like the best Mexican League prospects for the CPBL as second half possibilities. They are 1-2 in Ks, and their ERAs are below 4.50, which is good for the Mexican League. Their teams are likely to be well out of contention by mid-season, so they could be available.
I still like Miley, but 31 year old former MLBer Domingo Acevedo looks like the most likely CPBL prospect in the Mexican League.
Right now, Shawn Semple (29), Erich Uelmen (29), Tanner Tully (30), Morgan McSweeney (27) and Zach Plesac (30) seem like the best CPBL prospects in the Atlantic League. Plesac has significant MLB experience, Tully had MLB and KBO experience, and Uelmen has MLB. Semple and McSweeney have AAA experience.
