CPBL Foreign Players Updates Volume #366
CTBC Brothers News: José De Paula
On January 11, Liberty Sports reported that the CTBC Brothers have re-signed José De Paula for the 2025 CPBL season. The 36-year-old Dominican left-hander will return for his sixth season in Taiwan.
This re-signing came as no surprise, as clues in early November hinted that the Brothers intended to bring him back for 2025. José De Paula was originally slated to represent the Dominican Republic in the 2024 WBSC Premier12 tournament. However, he ultimately withdrew from the final roster following advice from the CTBC Brothers.
According to TSNA on December 31, José De Paula’s monthly salary in the CPBL is reportedly around 60,000 USD. The Brothers have declined to comment on this report.

The 2024 season was emotionally challenging for José De Paula, as he tragically lost his father at the start of the season and his mother during the middle of the season. Despite taking two bereavement leaves, De Paula remained professional and upheld his role as the team’s veteran ace. In 20 starts spanning 127 innings, José De Paula posted a 3.05 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP, a slightly above-average 17.6 K% and an elite 4.0 BB%.
During the postseason, José De Paula started Game 1 and Game 5 of the Taiwan Series, delivering a dominant performance with a 1.93 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP over 14 innings. He was later named the Outstanding Player of the Taiwan Series.
With the re-signing of José De Paula, the CTBC Brothers now have him and Kirk McCarty as their foreign players. Rumours suggest that the Brothers are currently in talks with Humberto Castellanos (new) and Daniel Mengden (returning from 2024).
