2023 CPBL Awards Results

On November 21, players, coaches, and hundreds of fans from the CPBL gathered at the Taipei Marriott Hotel for the 2023 CPBL Awards Ceremony.

Throughout the night, awards were presented to players in various categories, including the Gold Glove, Best Nine, and individual stats leaders.

Additionally, the league announced the recipients of major awards, such as MVP, Rookie of the Year, and Most Improved Player, as voted by members of the media.

Note: I don’t have time to cover all the categories, so I will just pick a few important ones worth writing for.

MVP: Drew Gagnon

  • ERA – 3.00 (3rd in the league)
  • WHIP – 1.16 (1st in the league, among 100+ innings pitched)
  • Strikeouts – 155 (1st in the league)
  • Innings Pitched – 183 (1st in the league)
  • WAR – 4.17 (1st among all pitchers)
  • FIP – 2.94 (1st, among 100+ innings pitched)
  • Wins – 13 (1st in the league)

“I am very appreciative of winning the MVP award, and obviously, I couldn’t have done that without my teammates. I also want to thank the coaching staff for trusting me to get the job done,” said Drew Gagnon.

Rookie of the Year: Cheng Hao-Chun

  • ERA – 3.02 (4th in the league, among 100+ innings pitched)
  • WHIP – 1.25 (5th in the league, among 100+ innings pitched)
  • Strikeouts – 110 (4th in the league)
  • Innings Pitched – 101.1 (9th in the league)
  • WAR – 1.38 (17th among all pitchers)
  • FIP – 3.60 (7th in the league, among 100+ innings pitched)
  • Wins – 9 (5th in the league)

“I am so fortunate to have my teammates supporting me on the field, and I want to thank the coaching team for giving me the opportunity,” said Cheng Hao-Chun.

Most Improved Player: Lee Tsung-Hsien

  • AVG – .318 (2nd in the league)
  • OBP – .378 (12th , among 200+ plate appearances)
  • SLG – .424 (13th, among 200+ plate appearances)
  • wRC+ – 135 (13th, among 200+ plate appearances)
  • Hits – 117 (8th in the league)
  • Stolen Bases – 17 (4th in the league)

“Winning this award is a validation of myself and my performance,” said Lee Tsung-Hsien. “This year, I cherish every opportunity on the field more, as my conditions were not great the previous year. I am preparing for the challenges of the new season, and I’m happy that I’ve been able to show improvement this year.”

Play of the Year: Chen Chen-Wei

Voted by CPBL fans, this walk-off home run robbing catch by Rakuten Monkeys’ Chen Chen-Wei back in June was crowned 2023 Play of the Year.

“I remember after the game, Chen Chieh-Hsien from the Uni-Lions called me, playfully scolding me for snatching away someone’s first walk-off home run,” said Chen Chen-Wei.
