TSG Hawks News: Steven Moya

On December 16, the TSG Hawks announced the re-signing of first baseman Steven Moya. The 34-year-old Dominican power hitter will return for his third season in Taiwan.

According to the Hawks, Steven Moya’s contract is worth USD 695,000, including performance incentives and additional family-related expenses. After the tragic passing of his wife earlier this year, Moya will bring his mother and two young daughters to Taiwan for the 2026 season.

“Of course, there are still finer details to be discussed regarding Steven Moya’s family arrangements for next year. The team hopes to provide him with sufficient support and an environment where he can focus on playing with peace of mind,” the Hawks’ general manager told Liberty Sports.

The 2025 season was a difficult one for Steven Moya, both on and off the field. He tragically lost his wife midseason after she fell ill during a long-distance flight to Taiwan. A few weeks later, Steven Moya suffered an abdominal strain that sidelined him for several weeks. Despite appearing in only 89 games, he delivered an MVP-calibre performance, slashing .305/.387/.589 with 25 home runs and a 184 wRC+.

It will be interesting to see how the TSG Hawks manage Steven Moya in the 2026 season, as the team will no longer benefit from the expansion team incentive of carrying an extra foreign player on the active roster. Could the Hawks be forced into a tough decision where they have to cut loose the foreign hitter in exchange for rotation depth? I guess only time will tell.

  1. If TSG needs rotation depth in the season, and they have to release Moya do you think he might go to the KBO as a mid season replacement?

    • Certainly a possibility for KBO team to pick him up as a midseason replacement, given his power and previous Asia experience in Japan and Taiwan hitting the “dead ball”, should be an easy transition for him.
