CPBL Foreign Players Updates Volume #337
TSG Hawks News: Ljay Newsome
On July 23, the TSG Hawks announced the signing of 27-year-old American right-hander Ljay Newsome from the Atlantic League. According to the Hawks, Newsome has already arrived in Taiwan and reported to the team.
Ljay Newsome started his professional career with the Seattle Mariners organisation in 2015. He made his MLB debut in 2020 and compiled a 6.53 ERA over 30.1 innings. Unfortunately, about one month into the 2021 season, Newsome suffered a season-ending elbow injury that eventually led to Tommy John surgery.
From 2022 to 2023, Ljay Newsome spent most of his time bouncing around the Cardinals and Giants minor league systems, playing rehab games. At the end of the 2023 season, he decided to elect free agency and left the MLB system.
In 2024, Ljay Newsome joined the Gastonia Baseball Club of the Atlantic League. Prior to his signing with the TSG Hawks, Newsome recorded a 4.15 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over 56.2 innings. To add a little more context, the Atlantic League’s average ERA on July 23 was 5.32.
As of today, the TSG Hawks currently have Kento Onodera (injured), Nick Margevicius, Steven Moya, Reymin Guduan, Bradin Hagens and Ljay Newsome as their foreign players. It is worth noting that Kento Onodera has a torn ligament in his right elbow and will be out for the remainder of the 2024 season.
