Rakuten Monkeys News: Lisalverto Bonilla

On February 17, the Rakuten Monkeys filled their 2020 foreign players quota by signing right-hander Lisalverto Bonilla. According to the Monkeys’ press release, Bonilla is set to report to the Monkeys’ spring training at the end of the month.

“Having the previous KBO experience, playing in Taiwan is not unfamiliar for me,” said Lisalverto Bonilla. “I look forward to begin my career in the CPBL.”

The 29-year-old Lisalverto Bonilla began his career in 2009 within the Philadelphia Phillies organisation and made his debut in the MLB in 2014 with the Texas Rangers.

In 2017, Lisalverto Bonilla had his second tour of the MLB with the Cincinnati Reds. During his two short seasons in the MLB, he compiled a record of 6.28 ERA and 1.55 WHIP over 57.1 innings.

After leaving the MLB system, in 2018, Bonilla signed the Samsung Lions of the KBO. Over 29 starts, he posted a 5.30 ERA and 1.52 WHIP across 168 innings of work.

Leading to his signing with the Rakuten Monkeys, Lisalverto Bonilla hasn’t pitched much in the 2019 season. He was active in the Mexican League and the Dominican Winter League but only pitched a total of 17 innings.

Lisalverto Bonilla’s Pitching Repertoire

Based on the 2017 data on Baseball Savant, Lisalverto Bonilla has four pitches in his arsenal.

  • Four Seam Fastball (36%) – 92.3mph
  • Changeup (27%) – 84.4mph
  • Curveball (23%) – 79.6mph
  • Sinker (14%) – 91.6mph

Further Readings

Foreign players come and goes, therefore we compiled a foreign players tracker to keep track of all the foreign players signing for the 2020 CPBL season.

    • 8.3 BB% in the KBO. That’s pretty good. The only concern I have is he barely pitched in 2019. But despite of his limited innings, he pitched pretty well in the Championship game at the Dominican Winter League.

  1. I wonder if the Monkeys talked to Keyvius Sampson before signing Bonilla. Sampson is a year younger, pitched better in the KBO in 2018, only pitched about as much in 2019 and is currently looking for a job.
