Rakuten Monkeys News: Morgan McSweeney
On June 21, the Rakuten Monkeys released Morgan McSweeney. The 28-year-old American right-hander finished the 2026 CPBL season with a 5.08 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP across 44.1 innings. His 9.9% strikeout rate and concerning 11.3% walk rate also ranked among the lowest percentiles in the league.
While the move itself was not particularly surprising, the timing was somewhat unexpected. Just 30 minutes earlier, Rakuten Monkeys manager had told reporters that the team only planned to demote Morgan McSweeney to the farm team rather than release (de-register) him.
With the release of Morgan McSweeney, the Rakuten Monkeys currently have Pedro Fernández (2-year deal), Kyle Marman, Tyler Eppler and Sakakibara Motoki as their group of foreign players for the 2026 CPBL season.
