Fubon Guardians News: Quinton Martinez, Erick Leal

On June 25, the Fubon Guardians announced the signing of Quinton Martinez from the Atlantic League. The 27-year-old American left-hander has already arrived in Taiwan and reported to the team as a backup foreign pitcher.

Around the same time, the Guardians also released Erick Leal. The 31-year-old Venezuelan right-hander spent the entire season in the Guardians’ farm team but did not make a single first-team appearance. He finished his 2026 CPBL stint with a 3.19 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP over 42.1 innings in the minor league.

In an interview with SET News, the Guardians manager said that although Erick Leal was active in the farm team, he was never able to deliver the kind of results and performances the team was expecting.

When asked about the decision to bring in Quinton Martinez, the manager said Martinez brings velocity, and especially with Taiwan having a lot of decent left-handed hitters, the team has consistently prioritised finding left-handed pitchers.

Quinton Martinez played in affiliated baseball from 2022 to 2024, reaching as high as High-A within the Los Angeles Angels organisation. Since 2025, he has been pitching in the Atlantic League. Ahead of joining the Guardians, he posted a solid 2.94 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP over 49 innings.

With the release of Erick Leal and the signing of Quinton Martinez, the Fubon Guardians currently have Suzuki Shunsuke, Shawn Morimando, Aaron Wilkerson and Abe Yudai as their group of foreign players for the 2026 season.

Foreign players come and go. Therefore, we have compiled a foreign player tracker, and I’ll be updating that list regularly to keep pace with the ever-changing roster shuffle throughout the 2026 CPBL season.
