On September 29, the CTBC Brothers defeated the Rakuten Monkeys 8-5, clinching the 2024 second-half season title and securing their playoff spot. This marks the Brothers’ 19th half-season title in franchise history.

The game started with the Brothers taking an early 2-0 lead, thanks to an RBI single by Chen Chun-Hsiu in the first inning and a solo homer from Chen Tzu-Hao in the third. The Monkeys managed to level the score at 2-2 with a two-run shot by Lin Tzu-Wei in the bottom of the fourth.

The score remained tied until the seventh inning when Chang Chih-Hao hit a crucial RBI double, putting the Brothers ahead. Chen Tzu-Hao then extended the lead to 6-2 with a three-run homer to deep centre, his second home run of the night.

In the top of the ninth, the Brothers added two more insurance runs, making it 8-2. The Monkeys tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth with a three-run homer by veteran Lin Hung-Yu, but the Brothers’ bullpen held strong and recorded the final two outs successfully, securing the 8-5 win.

“While I’m glad we won the second-half season title, we need to keep our focus on finishing first in the full-season standings,” Brothers’ manager Hirano told Liberty Sports.

2024 Postseason Teams: Brothers, Uni-Lions, Monkeys

As the 2024 regular season nears its end, the three postseason teams are now confirmed. The Rakuten Monkeys, who finished third in the full-season standings, will face either the Uni-Lions or CTBC Brothers in the best-of-five Playoff Series.

The team that finishes first in the full-season standings will advance directly to the best-of-seven Taiwan Series, while the second-place team will face the Monkeys in the opening round of the postseason.

As of September 29, the CTBC Brothers are currently in first place with a magic number of two and with four games remaining. The Uni-Lions, who are in a much less favourable position, are trailing three games behind with five games left.

Although anything can happen, it is likely that the 2024 CPBL postseason will see a Monkeys vs. Uni-Lions in the Playoff Series, with the winner advancing to the Taiwan Series to face the Brothers.
