CPBL Foreign Players Updates Volume #394

<<Vol #393 | Vol #395>>

Brothers Sign 2 Venezuelan Pitchers

On July 26, the CTBC Brothers announced the signing of William Cuevas and Jesús Vargas. According to the Brothers’ GM, with several current foreign pitchers sidelined due to injury, the team hopes these additions will strengthen their overall pitching depth.

As reported by Liberty Sports, the 26-year-old right-hander Jesús Vargas has already arrived in Taiwan and reported to the team, while 34-year-old righty William Cuevas is set to arrive on August 2.

With the signings of William Cuevas and Jesús Vargas, the CTBC Brothers’ current foreign player group consists of José De Paula (shoulder/arm inflammation), Humberto Castellanos, Nivaldo Rodriguez, and Nolan Watson (unreported injury?) and Brandon Leibrandt.

CTBC Brothers News: William Cuevas

William Cuevas began his professional career in 2009 with the Boston Red Sox organisation. He made his MLB debut in 2016 and appeared in 22.1 innings across stints with the Red Sox and Tigers between 2016 and 2018, posting an 8.06 ERA.

In 2019, William Cuevas joined the KBO’s kt wiz and spent the majority of the next seven seasons in Korea. In 2022, an elbow injury limited him to just one game before getting let go by the kit wiz. After that, he briefly played in the Mexican League and later signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers. He returned to the KBO midway through the 2023 season.

Across seven KBO seasons, William Cuevas compiled a 3.93 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 872.1 innings. In the 2025 KBO season, before signing with the CTBC Brothers, he recorded a 5.40 ERA and 1.53 WHIP over 98.1 innings. This rough stretch ultimately led to his release from the kt wiz.

CTBC Brothers News: Jesús Vargas

Jesús Vargas began his professional career in 2015 and remained in the MLB system through 2022. During those years, he played for the minor league affiliates of the Dodgers and Mets. Despite reaching Triple-A in 2021, Jesús Vargas primarily hovered around the High-A and Double-A levels.

From 2023 to 2025, Jesús Vargas played in the Venezuelan Winter League and the Mexican League. His most recent performance came during the 2024–25 Venezuelan Winter League season with Leones del Caracas, where he posted a 3.83 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 40 innings.

Notably, Jesús Vargas also represented Venezuela in the 2024 WBSC Premier12 tournament, making two appearances and compiling a 3.86 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 9.1 innings against Team USA and Panama.
