CTBC Brothers News: José De Paula

On August 14, the CTBC Brothers announced the release of José De Paula. The 37-year-old Dominican left-hander ended his 2025 campaign early, finishing with a 2.75 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over 52.1 innings.

José De Paula, one of the CPBL’s top pitchers over the past six seasons, suffered an arm injury that has kept him sidelined since early June. The Brothers have kept the specifics under wraps, only describing it as “arm discomfort.”

In a press release, the Brothers stated that José De Paula will remain in Taiwan for rehabilitation at the farm team facility. The club hopes he can return stronger and healthier next year, continuing to wear the Brothers uniform and further extending his CPBL career milestones.

In a video message, José De Paula said he is still undergoing treatment and will not have the chance to return to the field this year.

“I will work hard on my rehabilitation so that I can be 100% ready for next season, I have already discussed plans for the rest of this year and next year with the CTBC Brothers. I want to thank all the fans for their support over the past six years. If God allows, I hope to keep pitching in Taiwan for many more years,” said José De Paula.

While the Brothers organisation did not make any official announcement regarding their plan for José De Paula in 2026, TSNA reported that José De Paula’s contract with the Brothers is until the end of this season. It is unclear at this stage what kind of contract the Brothers will offer to José De Paula next year.

From 2020 to 2025, De Paula appeared in 133 games, starting 131, and posted a 2.79 ERA and 1.12 WHIP over 867 innings.

With the departure of José De Paula, the CTBC Brothes now have Humberto Castellanos, Nivaldo Rodriguez, Nolan Watson (unreported injury?), Brandon Leibrandt, William Cuevas and Jesús Vargas as their foreign players.

Further Readings

Foreign players come and go. Therefore, we have compiled a foreign player tracker, and I’ll be updating that list regularly to keep pace with the ever-changing roster shuffle throughout the 2025 CPBL season.
