Tsai Chi-Chang as CPBL Commissioner?

On December 18, Storm media broke the news that all five CPBL teams unanimously selected politician 蔡其昌 (Tsai Chi-Chang) as the next CPBL commissioner.

The 51-year-old Tsai Chi-Chang has been a legislator for Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party since 2005 and is currently the deputy speaker of legislative yuan. There are also rumours that Tsai might enter the 2022 Taichung city mayoral election.

“It is an honour and also a commitment being the commissioner,” said Tsai Chi-Chang. “I have been a life-long fan of baseball, and I want to express my gratitude to the CPBL teams for the nominations.”

Tsai Chi-Chang also jokingly told the media that since he is a supporter of the CTBC Brothers, if he becomes the commissioner, then he has to “leave the Brotherhood”.

Following the nomination, the representatives of all five CPBL teams are going to meet with Tsai Chi-Chang on December 21 to have a further discussion about the commissioner role. Should Tsai accepts the position, he will take over the commissioner job on January 16, 2021.

Under the CPBL rule, the commissioner is limited to two consecutive three-year terms. Since 1990, there have been ten commissioners.
